In siciliano suona Tèrmini Lugghiaturi ed è una cittadina in provincia di Messina, 7.000 abitanti e tanta energia. Terme Vigliatore si colloca fra Tindari e Milazzo frontalmente alle isole Eolie estendendosi su un’area a carattere pianeggiante irrorata dai corsi fluviali del Mazzarrà e del Patrì.
Comune autonomo dal 1966, ha una storia amministrativa assai recente ma a livello territoriale le origini risultano molto antiche, come rivelato da scavi archeologici e ritrovamenti perpetrati negli anni passati.
Le storiche terme
Il termine Terme si giustifica con la presenza in loco di una ricca sorgente di acque termali già ampiamente nota in epoca romana con il nome di Fonte di Venere, tenuta in grande considerazione da Plinio il Vecchio per le qualità terapeutiche. Uno dei più importanti centri termali della Sicilia oggi tramandato dal complesso termale del Parco Augusto.
Il comprensorio che inquadra geograficamente il borgo si divide fra mito e cronaca storica, poiché moltissimi studiosi ma anche persone comuni affermano che l’intera zona troverebbe ampia citazione nell’Odissea di Omero, che raggruppa i luoghi dell’hinterland cittadino sotto le famigerate “Terre del Sole” in più occasioni menzionate e descritte nell’opera greca. Rimanendo tuttavia con i piedi per terra in mancanza di evidenti prove tangibili, conviene limitarsi ad asserire che Terme Vigliatore si fregia di sorgere laddove non soltanto i Romani bensì altre civiltà pare si siano insediate, per non dire addirittura nate.
Cosa vedere a Terme Vigliatore
Al momento la massima eccellenza archeologica di cui gli autoctoni possono vantarsi consiste nella Villa Romana di San Biagio, vetusta residenza patrizia extraurbana risalente al I secolo a.C. e venuta alla luce intorno agli anni ’50 del Novecento. Molti elementi ne mettono in risalto l’indiscutibile bellezza, ad esempio la pavimentazione a mosaico che si è incredibilmente conservata fino a oggi. L’edificio si mostra a pianta quadrata, includente un cortile interno porticato e vive tracce di ambienti privati, di servizio e termali.
Proprio questi ultimi dimostrano come all’epoca la villa disponesse di riscaldamento tramite flussi di aria calda o vapore, con la possibilità di godere di acqua modulata a diverse temperature. Siamo dunque al cospetto di un sito di enorme interesse storico-culturale, testimonianza salda di un patrimonio archeologico da salvaguardare e tutelare.
Cambiando genere, si ha poi accesso al comparto monumentale ecclesiastico che può contare sulla presenza della Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie (sorge nel luogo dove anticamente sorgeva un monastero benedettino) e della Chiesa dei Benedettini, posta al centro del Parco.
Eventi, sagre e manifestazioni
Il Parco accoglie ogni anno a settembre la storica Fiera di Termini. Due giorni dopo si aprono ufficialmente i festeggiamenti e la processione religiosa in onore di Santa Maria delle Grazie, patrona del paese.
A Natale viene organizzato il suggestivo Presepe Vivente, la Festa di San Biagio e il Gioco della Pignata a febbraio, il Carnevale Termense e l’imperdibile Sagra della Melanzana nel periodo estivo.
La spiaggia di Terme Vigliatore
Strutture minori ma da non trascurare la Forca di Maceo, un tempo utilizzata per le esecuzioni delle condanne a morte, e infine il Gazebo, una volta a crociera inserita nel contesto del lungomare e la spiaggia di Marchesana.
Per inciso, il litorale di Terme Vigliatore asseconda la voglia di relax dei turisti, attratti in particolar modo dalla pace e dal cristallino mare di Sicilia che bagna la bella spiaggia di Tonnarella. Chi preferisce spa e benessere può soggiornare al Grand Hotel Parco Augusto, rinomato centro termale.
Come arrivare a Terme Vigliatore
In automobile il borgo è raggiungibile adottando molteplici soluzioni provenendo dall’Autostrada A20 Messina – Palermo con uscita al casello di Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto: la SS 113 per esempio, oppure la SP 99 di Tonnarella, la SP 94 di San Biagio o, ancora, la SP 97C, la SP 93, SP 98 e SP 91; la stazione di Terme Vigliatore si trova sulla linea ferroviaria Palermo – Messina; l’aeroporto di Catania Fontanarossa risulta essere quello più vicino alla località.

In Sicilian he plays Tèrmini Lugghiaturi and is a town in the province of Messina, 7,000 inhabitants and a lot of energy. Terme Vigliatore is located between Tindari and Milazzo facing the Aeolian Islands, extending over a flat area sprinkled by the Mazzarrà and Patrì river courses.
Autonomous municipality since 1966, it has a very recent administrative history but at the territorial level the origins are very ancient, as revealed by archaeological excavations and findings perpetrated in past years.
The historic baths
The term Terme is justified by the presence on site of a rich source of thermal waters already widely known in Roman times with the name of Fonte di Venere, held in great esteem by Pliny the Elder for its therapeutic qualities. One of the most important spas in Sicily today handed down by the Parco Augusto spa complex.
The area that geographically frames the village is divided between myth and historical chronicle, since many scholars but also common people affirm that the entire area would find ample mention in Homer’s Odyssey, which groups the places of the city hinterland under the infamous “Terre del Sole ”on several occasions mentioned and described in the Greek work. However, remaining with our feet on the ground in the absence of evident tangible proofs, it is convenient to limit ourselves to asserting that Terme Vigliatore prides itself on being born where not only the Romans but other civilizations seem to have settled, if not even born.
What to see in Terme Vigliatore
At the moment the greatest archaeological excellence of which the natives can boast consists in the Roman Villa of San Biagio, an ancient extra-urban patrician residence dating back to the 1st century BC. and came to light around the 1950s. Many elements highlight its indisputable beauty, for example the mosaic flooring that has been incredibly preserved to this day. The building has a square plan, including a porticoed inner courtyard and living traces of private, service and spa rooms.
The latter demonstrate how at the time the villa had heating through flows of hot air or steam, with the possibility of enjoying modulated water at different temperatures. We are therefore in the presence of a site of enormous historical and cultural interest, a solid testimony of an archaeological heritage to be safeguarded and protected.
Changing genre, you then have access to the ecclesiastical monumental sector which can count on the presence of the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie (located in the place where a Benedictine monastery once stood) and the Church of the Benedictines, located in the center of the Park.
Events, festivals and events
The Park welcomes the historic Fiera di Termini every year in September. Two days later the celebrations and the religious procession in honor of Santa Maria delle Grazie, patron saint of the town, officially open.
At Christmas the evocative Living Nativity scene is organized, the Feast of San Biagio and the Gioco della Pignata in February, the Termense Carnival and the unmissable Eggplant Festival in the summer.
The beach of Terme Vigliatore
Minor structures but not to be overlooked are the Forca di Maceo, once used for executions of death sentences, and finally the Gazebo, once a cross vault inserted in the context of the promenade and the Marchesana beach.
Incidentally, the coast of Terme Vigliatore favors the desire for relaxation of tourists, attracted in particular by the peace and the crystalline sea of Sicily that bathes the beautiful beach of Tonnarella. Those who prefer spa and wellness can stay at the Grand Hotel Parco Augusto, a renowned spa.
How to get to Terme Vigliatore
By car the village can be reached by adopting multiple solutions coming from the A20 Messina – Palermo motorway with exit at Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto: the SS 113 for example, or the SP 99 of Tonnarella, the SP 94 of San Biagio or, again, SP 97C, SP 93, SP 98 and SP 91; Terme Vigliatore station is on the Palermo – Messina railway line; Catania Fontanarossa airport appears to be the closest to the town.
